I love the logo; it's plain, simple and ol' skool. :)

Thought you might. But actually, I really don't care about the logo...but I wanted a new forum design. This grey/purple/white style is old and boring if u ask me. A new logo is just an addon so they fit 2gether.

The forum could be spiced up a bit, but to be honest I really don't care about eye candy at Slyck. Perhaps add a couple more phpbb themes, a dark one for example.

it's an old un, but a good one!

Postby moculon » Sat May 15, 2004 4:50 pm

i do agree that slick is a little dated in patches, but i'd much rather see the guides, and clients list updated and sharpened up (work on which i believe has commenced now?).

once that is done, provided the world hasn't changed too much work can be done on jazzy shockwave menus etc which are nice but not as nice as the excellent reporting and comprehensive guides which brought us all to slick in the first place.

and i'm sure what the forum lacks in vibrant colours and crazy designs, we make up for with some of the arguments and debates about es5, trustyfiles, spyware, the riaa and other contentious issues of the day!

I don't care either way, but some new designs would be pretty sweet though. But if it's found to be too time consuming, then forget it.

OK, i'll be glad to snaz things up, but i'll have fun with it and allow you all to give me ideas, and if everyone likes the change we keep it, otherwise we keep trying.!! so what is first? You guys want the gray gone? replace it with what?

Ray

I should at LEAST customize all the buttons so they don't look like half a billion other forums using phpbb..!

You're correct about the buttons. But I really like the style http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums just built in to their forums. Check it out. I really like the cool blue style, the cool blue buttons and the funky icons. I've posted one below, that one means that the thread is very popular: Image

You should keep the place looking plain and boring to keep your bandwidth and maintenance down and the lamers away. You don't want to be like Unite The Cows, which has really pretty colors on its forums but no content.

You can add as many themes as you like without destroying this "SubSilver" one :)

If you still think this one fits Slyck best, set it as default. At P2PFs we've added about half a dozen themes, all of which are pretty much unique. Even have different logos for each theme.

I agree with eclectica though. UTC is all eye candy and nothing else these days, IMO. 2 years back when many of us were at UTC, it was a basic vB design but with a very active community.

Neither P2PFs or Slyck are gonna win eye-candy of the year awards, but who cares? Give me quality over looks any day :)

Jast add a style that someone can choose instead of subsilver. If you like subsilver then use it, if not, you should have the option of using something else. And at the very least the buttons should be replaced Ray.

I am going to stay away from adding more styles that have been premade for phpbb.... Reason: I have already spent a lot of time modifying this style to work with the head and left menu of the current slyck site, anyone that knows about modding phpbb knows that a new style would mean that I would have to re-integrate the head and left menu into the new style template.

I also WANT the site to look the same to everyone, I am more looking toward modifying this style. So give me suggestions in that direction! :)

I'd like some eyecandy like Cybertechhelp have. I really like that style. Too bad I was banned from there...you should take a look at it. They had a style similar to this one, and everyone was complaining that it was too old and boring..

I recko that the reporting etc should take priority. Thast fantastic, and it needs to stay that way. New themes would be nice, though - maybe a dark one? I really want it to look like WinMX. :lol:

Why dont those who want a new theme set about creating one? It cant be all that difficult, surely?

Do YOU know how to make advanced PHP codes? I know I can't. I don't even know basic HTML...Plus, if you know, then the "Wiew source" function that most browsers have might be useful. Here's a sample of the source that I copied right off: var selLength = txtarea.textLength;
var selStart = txtarea.selectionStart;
var selEnd = txtarea.selectionEnd;
if (selEnd == 1 || selEnd == 2)
selEnd = selLength;

var s1 = (txtarea.value).substring(0,selStart);
var s2 = (txtarea.value).substring(selStart, selEnd)
var s3 = (txtarea.value).substring(selEnd, selLength);
txtarea.value = s1 + open + s2 + close + s3;
return;

If you don't have a programming background, learning PHP can be pretty frustrating.

I like the site the way it is.

I agree w/ eclectica...

Leave the forum as it is, nice and simple... (loads faster on my connection that way)

And if you are going to change anything, leave the subSilver theme... I understand what you said about the trouble involved adding new themes, but I feel the simple theme is what makes slyck unique.
It focuses the attention of readers on the content rather than it's surrounding.

Changing the buttons could look good though, as long as they fit w/ the theme..

EDIT: And whatever you do, don't hve alternating background colours...

Now that I think about it, I think you should add a few emoticons. The middle finger emoticon would be useful. :)
