Strikethrough

Postby HEAT84 » Fri Jun 05, 2009 5:19 pm

I haven't had a need for it here yet but you never know: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=220027

Spoiler tag's might be useful too: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=366815

Is PhpBB no longer in development? There forum is also running 2007 software. :?

Well actually it is but they developers neglected to upgrade their own forum. Or maybe they just didn't update the version year in the software. I'm sure there's a good reason why this forum's software hasn't been updated in awhile.

i don't doubt they are running the latest and greatest version. one gripe i've always had about phpbb is that it doesn't display the version number inherently. unless someone chooses to manually add it to the template, the only way to tell is with admin access.

Surely (or should that be surly?) that's a good thing. I think it's better to not display the version you're running. If an exploit/hack is discovered for a particular version, and you don't get chance to update immediately, you're advertising the vulnerability until you do.

Wasn't it in 2007 when somebody hacked this forum? I guess that's when they started hiding the version number. I don't think it would be too hard to figure out which version a site was running if you looked at the release notes and did a little detective work. Like what version did strikethrough and spolier tags become standard issue? This version would be older than that version.

HC: ya, i've considered that as the reason. i wonder if they've ever discussed this topic.

Heat: as far as i know, version info has never been a part of phpbb. i've been working with it for 6 years now, and it hasn't ever displayed it in that time. strikethrough and spoiler tags are not a part of phpbb. i am not sure what you're thinking of, but it's not this software. this forum is running the current version of the code, regardless of what the copyright notices tell you.

Well, both those mods are for phpBB2, if I'm not mistaken. Slyck is on phpBB3.

Also, I think you could probably implement both of those in phpBB3 without any mods, simply by using the 'BBCodes' feature in the ACP.

I've no doubt it wouldn't take much to work out what version of phpBB a board is running, as you say, but by advertising the version at the bottom of each page, I would guess it would make you a much more likely hacking target, since a potential hacker could probably just run a search to find forums running the particular version he is looking for.

Other forum software has strikethrough and spolier tags standard (although you have to type the strikethrough tag manually as there's no button for it). I assumed PhpBB would too by now since those plugins are 3 years old. The function those plugins add are pretty simple so I think they would work just as well with phpBB.

Well now we have strikethrough tags and a button :)

How's that?

(I just added an entry in the BBCodes section in the forum ACP)

What exactly do the spoiler tags do? I assume the purpose is to somehow hide text?

Yea ive seen it on other forums, it puts the text in a quote box the same colour as the background so you have to highlight it to read. Its useful in forums talking abouts films, TV, recent sports events etc. Not sure how useful it would be here though. You should add it! No, ive thought more and its not good. Sod it, add every tag available!

i've also seen it in a form where it presents a spoiler link which must be clicked in order to display the text. bottom line, it tells you there's something there, but forces you to take an extra step to actually see it, whatever the method involved.

Ok, here's a better idea .... everyone post them here (or in a new thread perhaps?) instead of PMing me! :o

That way everyone can give their opinion on them.

I'm not requesting those. I just wanted to  you. I had one more to post but that forum doesn't use a seperate show all emoticons window. :(

Glad you added strikethrough. I'll probably never use it though.

I said "emotions", not emoticons! :)

I know there's millions of emoticons, but most of them are just different ways of representing the same emotions. How many emotions do we need to represent, eg shock, sadness, confusion, laughter, etc?

I agree totally, we don't want HC overwhelmed with pm's, I should have NOT suggested that. ( Image) But.... :) Here are a few cute ones to consider. :)

12.Image 13.Image 14.Image 15.Image 16.Image 17. Image 18.Image 19.Image 20.Image

(If you want to move it to a new thread, g'head, lol)

I use Firefox with the Smiley Xtra add-on. No need to add smileys to this forum when there are so many other ways.

I know that I was not the only one who had inquired about more "emotions" or smiley's prior to this, and it certainly is not a request just to make more work for the admins, it's just something fun to consider. Not everyone uses Firefox, some use IE, or others, or some use more than one browser, etc.

I prefer the smaller, one-line smilies personally. I think they look neater and don't distract from the posts. The larger ones would be ok in the lounge I guess, but it would be difficult restricting their use to the lounge.

Of those you suggest Sunny, I think #5 and #16 (I've always liked those two!), and perhaps #9 and #11. :toast:
