Spam Threads

Postby Artie » Fri Dec 08, 2006 7:42 am

It seems like every time I wake up and check Slyck, some nutsack is posting spam. Maybe it's one person, maybe it's many - I don't know. And I notice it's at a time when not a lot of mods are online at a time, in order to extend the length of time that the thread stays there before getting deleted.

Perhaps we can come up with some workable idea to deball these spammers. The ideas could be serious or amusing.

zim's suggestion of not allowing any members to post until they've been a member for at least a week is good.

My suggestion is a bit more harsh. It involves CC sign-ups; it'll be free, of course, but whenever a first-time poster posts a thread full of spam, his CC gets charged $1000. I'm being a bit facetious here, but that'll definitely teach those money-grubbing f*cks a lesson.

Another way of doing it would be to write an automated PHP script to detect the spam before it gets posted. I know a way of doing it if I had the time and motivation, but it would take a bit out of me atm.

Any other inventive ideas from people?

I also suggest this be stickied. I've never gotten stickied before, and besides, I need my *cough* ego stroked anyway. :P

We have quite a few measures in place already, and the majority do get stopped or removed pretty quickly, but I'd welcome any suggestions to stop them all! :)

... and ok, go on, you can have a sticky! ;)

One ego effectively stroked.

I really don't think the spam is that great a drama atm. Not many slyckers are likely to be sucked in anyway.

sollution: "is this spam?" button (we could say "digg a hole for this spam?" Y/N)

all members since 3 months see a button which they can press if they see some real bad spam. when the secret counter reaches 20 the post is put to the very edge of the event horizon  in the adminstraters forum. when they get back from their beers they can decide to put it back or push it into obllivion!

But if the post is not spam (perhaps a mass revenge on some flamer instead or a joke) and it has to be returned to the forum all bad voters dontt see the button for the next 10 votes as punnishment

btw i can also be an new adminstrater for this site i am available to work right now i can see spam from a big distance and i would ban zim and carcassfan and a mod of your chooseing as soon as i start. I would also EVERYTIME give a reson why i banned.
i dont come cheap but we can make a deal on the money

artie no strokes from me. the only thing i'm stroking is carcassfans sack before i ban him

I reckon every post made by 216.133.204.228 is worse than 99% of the spam we get here, so any anti-spam measure embarked upon should take account of this...

Ive seen many forums that have a much worse spam problem than we do, and ive also never seen any forum adopt the idea zim or artie suggest. You cant make evryone who wants to be a member forced to give their credit card details over, many dont have one and no-one wants to give out there details unless they have to.

I think as it is works well. Occasionally we get spammer, but thanks to the activeness of the mods, its rare than at least one of them isnt online and deleting the thread within the hour.

And the average slycker isnt going to fall for these offers they spam anyway.

I guess you're right Bob. The spam here isn't nearly as bad as some forum. I guess all it becomes is annoying since the old-timers here won't fall for it. Some new members might though. They'll think, "Cool. Viagra. I gotta get me some of that"

And I really don't think IP guy above should become a mod. If he bans zim and Carcass, then all hell's gonna break loose.. LOL.. and then they might come after me.

But that gives the rest of us a good laugh. You wouldn't deprive us of the occasional idiot who posts to complain how badly they got scammed, would you?

Yeah, it would be a bit funny in that sense, even if he didn't get scammed but instead got a constant boner for life that wouldn't go away.

 i'd ban ip ijit anyways. anyone ever go to that ip? thinks hes funny. but he's not funny.

unless that is his ip. then not only is it not funny. he's a tool.

I still like the idea of not allowing any links until a week has past. Gotta cover all the variations too. http, www, spaces, just the tld.

or even not allowing them to post at all for 5 days. very few spammers would take the time.

or for more work on the mods.. putting any new users messages into an approval queue. nobody sees them until its approved.

i bet a 4th of all new users we've had lately are just here to spam.

This is a great, and easy to implement idea.

or even simpler. 24 hours after signup. then you can post.

anything less than instant posting would deter most spammers.

24 hours is probably more realistic.

maybe the signature isnt spam but the soft you try to sell is a cause of spam

InstantArticleSubmitter.com has over 200 sites that it will quickly post our articles too, and with just the touch of one button. When I saw this and showed it to the company, we knew that this was the elite software on the market today, and if we were going to use any piece of article submission software to model our own after, this was going to be it.

One way to stop spammers if they are bots is to use captchas for registration. And if the spammers are human then the moderators ought to be able to keep pace with them.

I think the issue was actually a backdoor way of registration (which would defeat CAPTCHA measures). A bunch of spam was already taken out with measures already put in place to keep a majority of spam off the forums though. :)
