So what ARE the rules for avatars?

Postby zim » Fri Aug 25, 2006 12:51 pm

Directly from the forum rules.

4) Avatars:

a) Avatars shall not be larger than 100x100 pixels. Although 80x80 is preferred, we will tolerate up to this size.
b) Avatars shall not have any pornographic images or foul/offensive language.
c) Avatars shall not exceed a data size of 200 kilobytes.

In no particular order as i browse around some active threads.

101x101 Slyckscratch
100x120 Slycktom
119x125 Zbeast
99x108 Bluebird
104x104 Carcassfan
100x109 Fartingbob
101x83 Dannybhoi
64x112 Dakiller
110x140 Lordfoul
110x114 DepecheNode
100x110 Malicious Intent
120x90 Lemmy

There. thas a nice sampling. And ignores all the data sizes totally. Which we've covered before here.

So what is it on size. a hard rule? or is there some flexability? but only for some people and not others?

I dont care which way it is. so long as i KNOW and dont have to screw with a new image more than once.

I remember the width matters, with the height having some flexibility.

The rule is exactly as stated in the rule you quoted Zim but, as with most of the rules here, we don't strictly enforce it. Would you prefer we were less tolerant and more dictatorial? Generally the avatar rule is enforced at our discretion and only when the avatar is beyond any reasonable limit and/or affecting the page layout, or is otherwise distracting/annoying to other users. I mean, when did you last get booked for doing 61mph in a 60mph zone?

Then stick to the size in the rules (or less) and you'll have no problems ;)

I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking, 'Did he use six superfluous adjectives or only five?' To tell the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement - but as I deal in English, the most powerful language in the world with subtle nuances that may blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' Well do you punk?

That's a double standard, favoritism, hypocrisy. By any term it's bullshit and you know it is.

Either enforce the rules / give everyone the same leeway.

Or just admit to playing favorites and running things how you feel from day to day. And put THAT in the rules so theres no misunderstandings in the future.

Thank you for sharing your feelings Zim. But if you think we're going to go around to every single avatar on this site, which is probably 10,000 or so, and measure each one, you've been mistaken.

There's only a handful of moderators against 10,000 avatars. Those are staggering odds and I think we all do a damn good job. I haven't had the time recently to write an article every day, and I certainly don't have the time to measure each avatar. Neither do the moderators. We have to enforce the rules when they need enforcing.

In a larger and more philosophical sense, an ideal forum would enforce each and every rule equally for every thread posted. But with the level of traffic we have, its just not possible.

That's basically the way things are, and unless we add another 100 moderators or so, that's the way it will stay.

I propose the new "Zim Method" of determining valid avatar sizes.

[(AH / IH)x(AW / IW)] <= [(IW / IH) x ((TP - LP ) / TP))^-1]

AH = Actual Avatar Height
AW = Actual Avatar Width
IH = Ideal Avatar Height
IW = Ideal Avatar Width
TP = Total Posts
LP = Lounge Posts

Were in this case IH = 100 and IW = 100 according to forum rules.

How do you measure up? :D

Sounds good to me.

[(80 / 100)x(120 / 100)] <= [(100 / 100) x ((4504 - 500 ) / 4504))^-1]

So whats the answer?

--------

And thats a real nice sidestep answer slycktom.

Most people dont have avatars. And alot of people dont ever post either.

Theres only a hundred or so people who post regularly. And thats where i got ava sizes. straight off the top posters list.

The EASIEST to enforce.

You're missing the point. It’s one of the least significant aspects to running the site. Whether its 100, 1,000 or 1,000,000 avatars. There are priorities, and policing avatars so that every "t" is crossed isn't one of them.

We enforce the avatar visually - if the avatar is obviously too larger we inform the person. But we don't go around measuring the pixels. No one really has the time for that. The rule is largely to keep the formatting of the page intact - not to be a dictatorship.

Sorry you don’t like our answers, but that's the way it is. You'll simply have to understand or not. Thank you for your thoughts on this issue.

0.96 <= 1.125 which is true of course it is the "Zim Method" now figure out how to apply it 18,000 times and we'd have a winner.

It's the same reason not every item sitting in a grocery store isn't perfectly lined up to the edge to look nice (well, all the stores that I know of) When you have several million items flowing through a store a week, you tend to look at priorities more than perfection.
