Uberchooser

Postby no_dammagE » Wed Sep 14, 2005 6:07 pm

Hehe,
i came to the idea, but I really hate JavaScript (please, don't implement it in JavaScript! Use server-side scripting please) and don't want to install a lamp to create it myself (my PHP knowledge is limited, I want to avoid SQL injections, local includes and so on).

The point is to create a p2p uber-dooper-app-chooser. Some kind of a wizard which asks some questions and gives the most suitable sollution(s) for the demand.

It would be useful for folks which have no knowledge, have no preference or which changed their plattform short time before asking such an oracle.

So I'll compile some Q&A's

Q: Target plattform
[ ] Windows
[ ] Unix/Linux
[ ] MacOSX

Q: My computer knowledge:
( ) I can play
( ) Bring it on
( ) Hurt me plenty
( ) Hardcore
( ) Nightmare
SCNR

Q: Target main media type(s):
[ ] Music (+Music videos, single songs)
[ ] Music compilations
[ ] Videos
[ ] Software
[ ] Games
[ ] Other

Q: Targeted file typical popularity
[ ] Rare
[ ] Medium
[ ] I love porn

Q: Approximate typical file size:
( ) small (1-40 MB)
( ) medium (40-200 MB)
( ) medium+ (200-800 MB)
( ) medium++ (800-1600 MB)
( ) I'm hardcore (1600+ MB)

Q: Speed importance
[ ] warp7
[ ] I can wait
[ ] Time doesn't matter
[ ] My machine runs 24/7/365/1

Q: Fear factor
[ ] I live in a bunker
[ ] I don't thrust you
[ ] I live in a law-free country

---

Already while filling out the form the server should only give possible examples - if speed sense is important, uptime is short, but you are paranoid ... well - no luck.

It is a matter of if-then, but might be a good addition to the guides list...IMO . I would implement it in python or as a java applet/jsp, but Slyck uses a Lamp or a BSDamp and both sollutions i can do are crippled here, I think.
Windows? Blah. Linux? Blah. BSD? Blah.

I had that idea a while back too. I built a quiz on quizilla, but they either deleted it, or my account, or something. It wasn't that good either.

Slyck should have a quiz, "What P2P is for you?". Just a quiz that gives you the name of anapp suited for you.
I can't program, so until someone that can shows up I'll stop my train of thought here.

:D answers?
Well, they are always welcome, but what are answers without an implementation? 8) Such an Uberchooser would be a perfect addition to the (very very very long) list of p2p apps IMHO.

Every app might get several keywords which might be needed for the uberchooser and the frontend will junk out the result by asking the DB ... And every app deserves attention. It will be also used in a suitable way by boons, I think. Might help a little against 30,234 * 10^32 mp3s in the share of incoming emules ...

Thanks for the feedback, btw
