Should I be alert when downloading music off IRC?

Postby Rolex » Mon Feb 12, 2007 10:59 pm

What the topic says...

From what I've read up on, it appears Usenet and IRC are the two best ways to download music without having to worry... BUT, does anyone have any other information about downloading music off IRC (since some stuff isn't available on Usenet until someone posts it.)?

As far as I know, downloading on IRC hasn't posed a threat to anyone. Uploading in most places isn't much a of a problem either.

I wouldn't go as far to say that there are no evils on IRC, but its "safe" compared to bigger/easier places to get your stuff.

Are you straight up just using a script and accessing fservs that way, or are you using dcklipper (or similar lame program)?

Well it's kind of hard to see what people are doing on irc unless your the person running the irc server.

The one and only C&D I ever did get was from irc.
but it was some 40 year old guy trying to scam people for $400.00.
He was running the scam out of a house in the Midwest.
Claiming to be a lawyer, Google earth showed his office to be a trailer in the middle of nowhere.

His computers were delt with in short order by the channel users.

I use Sysreset (a "modded" version of mIRC), and no, I don't use dcklipper.

I was only curious because that gives me a better idea about how much you know already about IRC, and/or how easily you could learn. I'm very familiar with sysreset because it was the fserv script of choice in the anime channel I used to frequent.

I wouldn't worry so much about "being caught" on IRC, especially if you can find a nice, close-knit group of people.

IRC is just about as safe as it gets in terms of uploading and downloading. You could run an XDCC server yourself for years and I'm sure nobody would bat an eyelash.

As for viruses, any attempt to get you infected should be pretty obvious. "Wow, I bet this exe file definitely contains music. I should probably run it to find out." Yea, you get the idea. MP3 files alone aren't enough to infect anybody as far as I know and I'd say a vast majority of viruses require you to run an exe file to work. So don't run them, ever, and you'll be fine.

What's a C&D? I think that's one for the file sharing dictionary.

I don't think so. The best way to download music is to sign up for allofmp3.com and go. I love usenet and irc but no contest there.

C&D = Cease and Desist

And didn't the RIAA just recently sue allofmp3.com?
